Tricky Math Problem (SLJ)

Kia Ora!
Hope you are having a nice holiday.

Here in New Zealand it can get quite wet and damp during winter. When this happens a lot of moulds and fungi begin to grow on walls or ceilings. This can be bad for our health, because we cannot see them with our human eyes and when it gets into the air, they are unhealthy for us.

Now let’s imagine that we tested the air in your classroom and found 7 different kinds of mould. The cleaner says that it takes 5 days for each mould to be removed. If the school had to remove each mould one at a time, how long would it take to remove all the mould from the classroom?

  • there are 7 type of mould
  • it takes to remove  5 days each mould
it takes 5 days to remove each mould

If it takes 5 days to remove one type of mould, then to remove 7 types of moulds will take:

1 mould would take 5days

I am trying to find out how many days it would take to get them removed. 7 moulds  would take       days

The number of days it takes to remove all of the moulds in the classroom will be:35

 I solved it by doing

  5   7=35

OR

+ 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 35.

So the awnser to the queation is 35 day

Do you know any other ways to solve this problem?

Thank you for reading my blog post please give me feedback goodbye.

  2. Hi Talisa,

Well done on having a go at solving this maths problem. I like how you have given me a clear explanation of the steps you have taken. It is great to see how you've used both multiplication (x) and addition (+) to get to your final answer.

Great job on putting down the unit ("days") for your answer as well. Without the units, we won't be able to tell what the number actually represents. I have a bonus question for you - If you had to change this answer into 'weeks', what would your answer be?

In other words, have a think about how many weeks would equal to 35 days.

    All the best,
    Susie

    1. Hello Susie,
Thank you so much for commenting on my blog. I have found out the answer to your bonus question and would like to tell you my answer and how I solved it.
This is how I solved it.
You asked, How many weeks will equal to 35 days?
I know there are 7 days in a week.
I am trying to find out how many weeks are in 35 days?
At first I ways going to give up but my answer is five weeks.
      I solved it by doing
      7+7=14 (2 X 7)
      14+7=21 (3 X 7)
      21+7=28 (4 X 7)
      28+7=35 (5 X 7)

      5weeks would equal to 35days.

I found out the answer by counting all the sevens I used after.
Thank you for giving me your time to write and comment on my blog please tell me if you think my answer is wrong.

      Goodbye
