Guardian of the sea(SLJ)

Kia Ora Everyone,Do you know of any legends? There are many legends in New Zealand.  In the Māori legend, the Waikato River has hundreds of taniwha (mythical water spirits) living in it, guarding the sea.

Taniwha these mythical water spirits are known to be scary and very protective of the waters where they live. They are neither female or male, and hid in lairs that are scary which people avoided. They are also known to capture people and eat them or kidnapped women to take as their wives; but when the heroic slayers, who triumphed with their cunning and courage killed them, the women are able to return to their families. It is also believed that taniwha change into a giant reptile, well known in New Zealand as Ngārara Huarau.

Would you believe that the Taniwha existed? If not, why?

I think I don't believe in the Taniwha because I would want to see for myself.

Do you believe in the Taniwha?

Do you not believe in the taniwa?

  1. Hi there Talisa,

Well done on completing another Summer Learning Journey post!

You have written a really well detailed description of what the Taniwha is and what the legend entails so ka pai! Where did you find all of your wonderful information? The Taniwha definitely does sound a bit scary, I don't think I would want to come across one.

I am not sure I believe in the Taniwha or not to be honest as it's not something anyone has seen however it may just be really good at hiding or only show itself to certain people so who knows.

Until next time, happy blogging. :)
