pH Colours

 Aim:

I want to find out what the colours of pH are.

Research



Method:

Equipment

  • Acid - Hydrochloric Acid
  • Base - Sodium Hydroxide
  • Test tube rack with test tubes
  • Universal indicator
Instructions
  1. Get your equipmeant
  2. Put ten drips of universal indicator into the test tube
  3. Add diffrent amounts of acid and base into the test tube
  4. Watch what happens to the colour

Disscusion:

1. What is an acid?
An acid is a chemical. It is any substance that in water changes ur taste. For example sour, changes blue litmus paper to red, reacts with some metals to liberate hydrogen, reacts with bases to form salts, and promotes chemical reactions (acid lists).

3.What happens when you react an acid and a base?
The reaction of an acid and a base is called a neurtalization reaction. 

4. How do you measure acid levels?
You measure acid levels with pH. The range goes from 0 - 14 and 7 is the neutral.  Anything below 7 is acid and anything above 7 is base.

5. What are the pH colours?
Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet

Sherbet Making

 Aim:

I want to find out how to make Sherbert

Research:



Method:

Equipment

  • Raro/Icing sugar
  • Baking powder
  • Cintric Acid
  • Paper
  • Posicle Stick
  • small Paper cup
Instructions
  1. Get your equipment 
  2. Put a spooon of raro, baking powder, cintric acid on a paper sepratly 
  3. Scoop up a bit of each with your popsicle stick into your small paper cup
  4. Taste and see what you need to add more of until you get the perfect mix of Sherbert
  5. Share it with other people (You don't need to but its nice to do that)

Why did it foam?
Citric Acid is literally an acid.

Mentos and Coke

 Aim:

I want to find out what happens when you drop mentos into coke.

Research

(With extra unwanted Info)


Method:

Equipment
  • Mint Mentos (The original)
  • Fresh Coke (No Sugar)
  • Sprite
  • Detergent
  • Beaker/10 mil Measuring cylinder
  • Safety Glasses
  • Measuring Cylinder 100 mil 
Instructions
  1. Get your Equipment
  2. Put on your safety glasses
  3. Measure 30 mils of coke into the 100 mil measuring cylinder
  4. Measure 10 mils of detergent
  5. Pour your detergent measuring cylinder with coke
  6. Drop your mentos into the mix of detergent/coke in the measuring cylinder
  7. Observe what happens
  8. Measure the length of the foam that comes out. (For my class)
  9. Repeat this with 3 other bottles of different fizzy.(For my class)
  10. Compare them the other lengths to each other(FOR CLASS)

Discussion:

Why did the bubbles form?
The rock surface on the outside of the mentos causes the fixxy to fizz.

Turn milk into plastic

 Aim:

I want to find out how to turn milk into plastic

Method:

stir until hot gas off

Equipment

  • Stove, oven, microwave ( I am using a Bunsen burner)
  • Measuring cup (I am using a  big Beaker)
  • Measuring spoon(tsp,)
  • Milk (200mils) 
  • Pot or microwavable container
  • White vinegar
  • Paper towels 
  • Stirring rod
  • Measuring cylinder)
  • Heat mat
  • Tripod
  • Gauze mat
Instructions
  1. Get your equipment
  2. Pour 200mils of milk into the beaker (Basically using milk powder)
  3. Set up your Bunsen burner 
  4. Heat up your beaker with the milk on  the Bunsen burner
  5. Stir the milk with the stirring rod
  6. Pour in vinegar with your measuring cylinder then continue mixing 
  7. Stir the mixture with the stirring rod until hot
  8.  Use a funnel to filter the curds and pour the mixture into the filter over top of a sink until all the liquid drains out( Stuff one paper towel into a funnel to make a filter)
  9. Get four paper towels and put your milk onto it 
  10. Pat it till dry
  11. Clean up your mess
  12. Colour, shape or mold the dough as you like
  13. (Optional) Colour your dough with food colouring
  14. (Optional) Add glitter
  15. (Optional) Use cookie cutters to shape your dough 
  16. Leave them to dry overnight

Skittle Colours

Aim:

I want to find out what happens when you put skittles in water.

Method:

Equipment
  • 8x Skittles
  • Warm water
  • Petri Dish
  • Beaker
  • Paper towel
Instructions
  1. Get your equipment
  2. Put the skittles into the petri dish
  3. Spread the skittles out around the sides of the petri dish
  4. Don't need to but (Do not put the same coloured skittle next to each other (?)
  5. Clean the beaker with the paper towel 
  6. Place the used paper towel on the table
  7. Carefully place the petri dish on top of the paper towel.
  8. GENTLY pour the water in the middle of the petri dish until it is half full
  9. Observe what happens

Describe what happened

The colour on the skittles in the petri dish slowly dissolved heading towards the middle colouring the water. The colours were separated which made it look like a pattern.

Why did the colour move the way it did?
Because of the shape of the skittle.When sugar is moved into water it heads towards the middle. The colour comes out of the skittle and slowly spread out.

Edible Slime

 Aim:

I want to find out how to make edible slime.

Research:



Method:

Equipment
  • Bag of any sized marshmallows ( using 5 jumbo marshmallows)
  • Cornflower or cornstarch
  • Oil (Can use any oil even coconut oil)
  • Heatproof bowl (I am using a paper cup)
  • Spoon or any Mixing object
  • Microwave
  • Board (I am using a piece of paper)
Instructions ( From the Video)
  1. Get your equipment
  2. Take two handfuls of marshmallows or any amount your comfortable with and put them in the heatproof bowl(paper cup) 
  3. Put the bowl/ plastic cup in the microwave for 30 seconds (Quite hot be careful)
  4. Mix the marshmallows with the spoon or other mixing object
  5. Check that they are nice and hot and squishy
  6. Give a good stir round with the spoon/mixing object
  7. Add a little spoonful of oil
  8. Stir that nice oil in properly with the spoon/mixing object
  9. Add about half a cup of cornflower or cornstarch (Not all in one go)
  10. Stir and mix in as much flour as you can with the marshmallows
  11. (If you want) Add some food colouring into the mixture
  12. Wait a little for your mix to cool down
  13. Make sure your hands are clean
  14. Start kneading the mix with your hands like you would with normal slime 
  15. Sprinkle a little bit of cornflour or corn starch onto the board
  16. Take some of the mixture with your hands and place it on the board or paper
  17. Knead the mix on the board with your hands like you would with normal slime
  18. Keep kneading and putting in a bit of cornflour or corn starch each time
  19. Make sure there is enough flour in slime
  20. (If you want to) Add some sprinkles or decorations
  21. Enjoy playing with or eating your edible slime

Gummy Bear Osmosis

 Aim:

I want to find out what happens when gummy bears are put in liquids.

Method:

Equipment

  • Salt Water/Sodium Chloride
  • Normal Water
  • Sugar Water/Sucrose
  • Gummy Bears
  • 2x Petri dishes
  • Marker
  • Electronic Scales 
  • Safety Glasses
Instructions
  1. Get your Equipment
  2. Wear your safety glasses (IT IS A PRINCIPAL in the science lab).
  3. With the marker, write your name and the conditions (dry, water, saltwater, sugar water) and the weight of gummy bears on the bottom of Petri dishes
  4. Do the experiment.

The water gummy weighs the most weight.
Why? The reason why is because gummy bears have small holes inside them. In water there are small molecules and Sugar/salt water have big molecules. Since gummy bears have quite small holes more little water molecules can come in and can expand. Sugar and salt water aren't able to do that because of their big molecules only a few could make it inside but they get clogged.

If not because the gummy bear absorbs the water.

Lighting a Bunsen Burner

Aim:

I want to find out how to safely light a Bunsen burner.

Method:

Equipment
  • A Bunsen burner
  • A heat mat
  • Matches or lighter
  • Safety glasses

Instruction
  1. Get your equipment prepared
  2. Wear your safety glasses
  3. Connect the hose to the gas tap
  4. Turn the collar to close the air hole
  5. Light the Lighter/Matches over the barrel
  6. Turn the gas on
  7. Turn the collar to open the air hole 
  8. When finished turn off the glass

Hands on Fire

 Aim: 

I want to find out light my hands on fire SAFELY

Method:

Equipment

  • Lighter
  • Water
  • Gas
  • Tray
  • Hose
  • Liquid Soap
  • Safety Glasses
Instructions
  1. Get the Equipment ready
  2. Fill the tray with water
  3. Squirt the liquid soap into the water and mix it it around
  4. Connect the hose to the gas tap
  5. Turn the gas on
  6. Make bubbles of gas
  7. Wear your safety glasses
  8. Wet your hands and arms with water (If you have fire in your hands your hands will burn)
  9. Scoop the bubbles with both hands from the tray
  10. Take two steps from the tray
  11. Hold the bubbles as far away from your face as possible (Hold steady in front of your face)

  12. Light the bubbles on fire

Results



I saw... the fire emerge and disappear. It was bright red and yellowy orange. It went straight up and dissipated when I put my hands out.

I heard... other people being loud and somehow the sound of the fire getting burned.

I smelt...the heat from the fire. It smelt burnt and gassy. Even when the fire went away the smell remained.

I felt... excited and nervous. My heart was beating so fast. It was great and so much fun.
