Bird of the year (SLJ)

Good morning everyone

New Zealand is a home to many different kinds of native birds. About a third of our native bird species are at risk of disappearing forever and becoming extinct.

New Zealand holds a ‘Bird of the Year’ competition where people can vote for their favorite native bird. This year, the winner was the kererū.

I am Going to go on the Bird of the Year website, look through the native birds on the site, and choose one that interests you and be writing you a short description of the bird I picked.

The bird I picked is the Rowi.
It is a okarito brown kiwi and the rarest of NZ five species. It is found in Okarito on the west coast of the south Island. the Rowi eat earthworms, spiders, crickets, weta and freshwater crayfish. They also eat fallen fruit and seeds.

  1. Greetings Talisa,

When I first saw the picture of the bird you've chosen, I thought it looked so much like a kiwi bird. I did a quick research to find out that Rowi is by far the rarest of our kiwi species, with only around 400 left! I never knew about this okarito brown kiwi so thank you for sharing this on your blog!

Did you ever see a kiwi bird in real-life? Would you like to? I know that they are mostly active in the dark so it would be a challenge to spot one. Did any of the other birds catch your attention on the ''Bird Of The Year' website?

    Keep up the great work,
    Susie :)
