2018-2019 Summer Learning Journey Concludes

Hello and Kia Ora Everyone.

We have come to the end of summer learning journey.

I would like to thanks all the teachers who have make summer learning journey possible for students like me. I would also like to say thanks to my teachers and my school for letting me participate and teaching me how to write a blog post.

Summer learning journey was very educational. I get to learn a lot of interesting things. One of the most interesting topic I learned by participating on Summer Learning Journey is on Week 4: Protect and Preserve. I get to know ways I can start to do in helping save the planet. I learned that I need to used reusable things and conserve what cannot be replaced.

One thing that surprised me was that I find it difficult in finding time to do my blog, doing research and thinking about the question and how to respond. I was actually thinking about quitting in week2 but my mum encouraged me to push on. Said if I quit, I'll be a quitter. I am very grateful and thankful for my family especially my mum for encouraging and supporting me through my summer learning journey.

The one thing that concerned me and upsets me during my summer learning journey was because I have to do three blogs a day and try to reply to comments on my blog post. It concerns me because I want to get it done each day and I couldn't do it and it upsets me. I'm glad my mum always helps me understand the questions or figure something out when I'm stuck with a question.

The one thing me and my family can do to help protect our natural environment is by using reusable things like shopping bags and water bottles instead of plastic bags and plastic water bottles.

What would you do to help our environment?

Thank you for visiting my blog post.
Have a good day.

Adoption Day

Hello everyone,

Do you know by reducing, reusing and recycling helps save our planet, you can also help to save animals and plants by 'adopting’ them.
With the World Wildlife Fund(WWF), you don’t actually adopt the animal and bring it home! It’s a symbolic adoption. Isn't it great! You get to adopt an animal you like but won't have to take it home because your home is not big enough. But you still help looking after the animal by paying for food and care for your adopted animal.
I will be visiting the WWF site and take a look at the animals who are available for adoption and choose my top three animals from the website.
Today on my blog I will list the three animals that I have chosen and then compare and contrast them and tell you out of the three animals the one I would most like to adopt.
1. Panda
Panda

2. Snowy Owl
Snowy Owl
3. Polar Bear
Polar Bear

I think the three animals are similar because they are all carnivores (meat eaters) and have the color white and black on their coats. This helps them to blend into their environment. Also the mothers of each animals care for their babies and are very protective.

The difference between these animals one can fly and one lives in the ice cold and one eats bamboo leaves.

All of the animals were amazing but I think I like the panda the most because he looks cute and cuddly and when I look at his face he looks sad.

Would you choose the panda?

Goodbye I hope you enjoyed reading my blog hope to see you on my next blog post please leave a comment and like my blog thank you.

Beat plastic pollution (SLJ)

Hello Everyone,

Have you ever heard of world environment day?

On World Environment Day we do what we can to protect our planet it is in June. This year the focus is on reducing the use of plastic bags and water bottles.

Today I will be telling you three things that I could do to help save the planet.
  • conserve and preserve
  • use reusable bags and water bottles instead of plastic bags and bottles
  • keep our water clean
would you do these things to save the planet?

Au revoir Everyone, hope you enjoyed reading my blog and coming on my next blog post. Please leave a comment and like my blog.

Restricted Access (SLJ)

Welcome everyone,

Have you ever heard of a place called Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is one of the most unusual and spectacular sites to visit outside of New Zealand. It is an ancient city that was built high up in the mountains in the country of Peru in South America. You have to take a train and/or walk through mountains and valleys to reach it.

Millions of tourists have made it to Machu Picchu. Unfortunately, this has damaged the area and the government has decided to restrict the number of visitors to the site each year. This decision has upset a lot of tourists who really want to see Machu Picchu but aren’t allowed to go.

Today I will be telling you what I think about the government’s decision to restrict the number of tourists able to visit this special site.

I think it is not really fair that the government has restrict the number of people to see this site and upset the ones who want to see it. But I also think that if lots of people go on the site they can seriously damage it. So I think it would be great if the government comes up with ideas to help those who want to visit Mach Picchu and protect the site too.

Do you think the same?

Do you think differently?

Adiós everyone hope you enjoyed reading my blog and coming to my next blog post please leave a comment and like my blog .

Count Down Plastic Free (SLJ)

Hello everybody,

Over the past few decades some of New Zealand’s beaches have become dumping grounds for waste and rubbish. Almost 80% of this waste is made up of plastic items.
Some companies in New Zealand have heard about the problem and agreed to cut down on their use of plastic. Countdown supermarkets.
Today I will ask one member of my family or a friend what they think about Countdown’s decision to go ‘plastic bag free and tell you how they felt.

I have asked my mum and she said that it is a good idea because it will be good for the environment due to the fact that it takes lots of years to break down plastic into the soil. Also it would be good for turtles who always mistaken a plastic bag as a jellyfish.

Bye bye everyone I hope to see you on my next blog post I hope you enjoyed reading my blog please leave a comment down below and like my blog.

Slogan (SLJ)

Welcome back to my blog,

Do you know what a slogan is?A slogan is a memorable motto or phrase used in a clan, political, commercial, religious, and other context as a repetitive expression of an idea or purpose, with the goal of persuading members of the public or a more defined target group.(from Wikipedia)

Imagine, that you have been hired by Forest & Bird New Zealand to work on one of their campaigns. It is your job to come up with a catchy slogan for the campaign.

'Make New Zealand a better place with Birds & trees today'.
or
'Keep the forest green, keeps birds happy'

In your comment please tell us witch slogan you think is better.

Did you like the slogans?

Goodbye everyone hope you enjoyed this blog post and coming to my next one please leave a comment and like my blog thank you.

Protect and Preserve(SLJ)

Aloha Everybody welcome back to my blog.
Did you know Sir David Attenborough is a famous TV presenter from England who loves nature and the natural world. He has spent his career filming documentaries about the planet and working hard to protect it. When Sir David was asked in an interview to reflect on all that he had learned and to imagine that he had suddenly been given the power to save 10 animals and plants from disappearing forever. After thinking about the question, he listed these 10 species who he wanted to save.
Let’s imagine that you had the same power and that you could save 10 species (animals or plants) from extinction. Who would you save?

Today I will list 10 species (animals or plants) that I would protect from extinction and give you a reason why I think it is important to protect them.
  • Sumatran tiger
  • Baiji dolphins
  • Ploughshare tortoise
  • Iberian lynx
  • Sumatran Rhino
  • Greater Bamboo Lemur
  • Amur Leopard
  • Hula painted Frog
  • Axolotl
  • Yangtze Giant soft-shell turtle
I think it is important to protect them, because first they might go in to extinction fast. Then the future generation won't be able to have the opportunity to see them in real life and I think that every living thing is important and should be saved first before it gets extinct.

Would you want to protect these animals?

Goodbye I hope you enjoyed reading this blog post please leave a comment below and like my blog thank you.

  • Māui dolphin are the smallest of the world’s 32 dolphin species.
  • Females grow to 1.7 m long and weigh up to 50 kg. Males are slightly smaller and lighter.
Now I will be telling you three more facts but it may be false or true find out for yourself.
  • They only live up to 20 years. This is a short lifespan compared to other dolphins and whales.
  • Māui and Hector’s dolphins look very different to each other
  • They live up to 60 years this is a long lifespan.

Predator Free (SLJ)

Hey Everyone,
Week 4:Day 3 Activity One

The activity I was supposed to do is, I  have to watch 3 short video [Cacophony project, Taranaki Mounga project and Zero Invasive Predators(ZIP)] and then choose one I like the best and why? But I couldn't do it because I couldn't connect to the link of the videos to watch.
So I thought I'll ask Mr Google about one of the video given and talk a little about it.
 I choose

From the video I found out that their vision is for the Iwi, agency and community to work together in restoring and conserving life on Taranaki Mounga back to life, free of predators .
They talk about what and how they are going to come about in achieving their goals for Taranaki Mounga.
Also what they can achieve with the government to reach their goals.
I like the project because the Taranaki Mounga(mountain) have a special meaning to the Taranaki community and New Zealand and that is special.

What do you think of the project?

Thank you for reading my blog.

Marine protection (SLJ)

Hello Everybody,

Have you ever heard about the project called bring new voices to marine protection in Scotland?

It is a campaign to help the community's voice or ideas in the coastal area be heard on how to manage their seas and how to best protect marine life in the area.

I have been looking through a website filled with projects like the one project bring new voices to marine protection in Scotland.

Today I will be telling you about that project and why it interests me the most out of all the projects.

The reason I chose this one because I like the idea of a community working together. Also it is best to listen to those who live in the area to help come up with better ideas to conserve  and best protect the marine life and the globally-renowned seabird colonies that nest there.

Are you interested in any projects?

If so,which one are you interested in? and why?

Bye bye please leave a comment and like my blog thank you.

Gardening (SLJ)

Talofa everyone,

Have you ever done gardening?

My mum told me that gardening takes a lot of hard work and patience. Especially if the soil is not rich in nutrients need by the plants.
I've done gardening at school and I didn't like the worms we found in the soil.

Today I would list down the ten vegetables I would like to plant in my garden if I ever have one😇,

  1. Cucumber
  2. Carrots
  3. Lettuce
  4. Avocado
  5. Potatoes
  6. Strawberries
  7. Ginger
  8. Long beans
  9. Tomatoes and
  10. Oranges
The reason I would plant these, is because I like eating them. I like salad and having fresh vegetables will make it tastes great.

What would you plant in your garden? and why?

 Please comment.
Thank you for reading my blog.

Flying fox(SLJ)

Hey Everyone

 Welcome,

Do you know what the 'flying fox' is?

I am not talking about an animal, but if you go to one of the parks in Christchurch. There you will see a tall zipline on a child’s playground known as 'flying fox'.

Corner of Broadpark and Beach Road, New Brighton.

How would you feel if you got to have the chance to go ziplining in Rotorua?

If I were to be going ziplining in Rotorua, I would be really excited and can't wait to try it out because I have tried it before in a playground and liked it. But it looks very high in Rotorua and I'm not so sure about trying ziplining in Rotorua. I would be curious at first but then I would worry I might fall to my death and die. Who knows when the time comes, I might be brave enough to give it a try and focused more on the adventure than be flustered(nervous) by how high it is and how fast I would go.But then again I might be adventurous.

How would you feel?

Would you feel the same way or would you feel differently?

Bye bye I hope you enjoyed reading this blog post please leave a comment and like my blog thank you.

Trip to Beijing(SLJ)

Kia Ora and Welcome,

Have you ever been  to the largest of all Asian countries, that has the largest population of any country in the world.

Did you guess which country I'm talking about? If you guess CHINA then you're correct.

Do you know anything about China?

I have read that they have smog in China. The air pollution is so bad that you sometimes won't be able to see properly because it looks like its foggy, and the air is so bad that people wear mask to protect themselves when they go out, because they can get really sick from breathing the air everyday.

If I were asked to travel to Beijing in China, I would be excited at first to travel but then I would feel scared because of the air pollution and what would happen to me because of it would I need to go to the hospital?

Here is a picture of Beijing

Guardian of the sea(SLJ)

Kia Ora Everyone,Do you know of any legends? There are many legends in New Zealand.  In the Māori legend, the Waikato River has hundreds of taniwha (mythical water spirits) living in it, guarding the sea.

Taniwha these mythical water spirits are known to be scary and very protective of the waters where they live. They are neither female or male, and hid in lairs that are scary which people avoided. They are also known to capture people and eat them or kidnapped women to take as their wives; but when the heroic slayers, who triumphed with their cunning and courage killed them, the women are able to return to their families. It is also believed that taniwha change into a giant reptile, well known in New Zealand as Ngārara Huarau.

Would you believe that the Taniwha existed? If not, why?

I think I don't believe in the Taniwha because I would want to see for myself.

Do you believe in the Taniwha?

Do you not believe in the taniwa?

Let it rain (SLJ)

Hey readers,

Let’s imagine that New Zealand was hit by a massive acid rain storm and the Acidic rain fell for three days and three nights. When it was still raining I stayed inside with my friends and family. When it stopped Me and my family decided to go for a walk outside. I opened the door and...

Today I will write a short story about what happened when I opened the door and walked outside after the acid rain storm stopped.

So I opened the door and saw that beautiful New Zealand was no more because of the acid rain. No more green nature scenery all destroyed by the acid rain. We went step by step and noticed everyone was still inside. I assumed that they did not notice the rain has stop and continued to walk. As I explore, I wanted to touch the puddles but remembered that it was acid rain and have bad chemicals in it. While we were walking, it started to rain a little bit and I told everyone to run back home as fast as we can. I didn't know if it would be acid rain or normal rain. When I spot my home I sprinted to the door and so did my family. We all made it home safely and we were all relieved and tired and all went to sleep. Seeing how pollution can make acid rain and destroy our environment, I never wanted this to happen.

How did you like my story?

Does it make sense?

Thank you for reading my blog post please leave a comment down below and like my blog post bye.

Clouds Picture1(SLJ)

Kia Ora

Have you ever wonder how clouds floats high up in the sky.
What are clouds made of?

Clouds are formed when small drops of water sticks together.

Do you play games of naming the shapes of the clouds? My mum said they used to do that when she was young. Maybe because they didn't get to have devices like today.

So I want to play the game with you.
Here is a picture of the cloud, what shape(s) do you see? and describe what you see in lots of details.

 Picture1

When I look at the cloud I see a shape of a cloud with a head of a horse with crazy eyes and no nose. I also see bunny ears on the head. There is also a mermaid tail at the end. The cloud looks like it is holding a baby and eating it .

Do you see the same thing?

Goodbye please leave a comment down below thank you.

Seven stars (SLJ)

Hello Everybody,

Have you ever read a book called Seven Stars Of Matariki?

Today I will be writing a summary about the book.

I think the book is about a smart brother named Mitai and his brothers who only care about their looks. One day they heard beautiful songs comes from high up the mountain. When they climbed up the mountain they saw beautiful women and they fall in love. Then they start to become skinny and weak and their smart brother Mitai starts to get suspicious of the wives and follows them he finds out that his brothers wives change into birds and are trying to starve them to death. He ran back to his brothers and told them and they all went heartbroken. Mitai's grandfather made a magical net for his brothers captured their wives. The brothers captured their wives and gave them to Mitai, who gave it to the goddess of the stars who took them far away. The wives are allowed to shine their beauty each winter in the sky and once a year they shine in the eastern sky.

Did you like how I summarized it? If you like you can read the book yourself.

Pollution (SLJ)

Hello Everyone,
Have you thought about the air we breath?

What if we cannot breath air again because it is unhealthy for us?

This is called air pollution.

I have watched a video about air pollution and here to tell what I have learned from it.

Air pollution contains chemicals and particles that can cause serious health in the environment. Air pollution is caused from things like volcano eruptions and fires. Some air pollution are caused by nature like volcanoes and gases. But the most air pollution comes from human activities like energy use like coal fires.
There are different types of air pollution made by humans. When we burn fossil fuels to reduce energy they release greenhouse gasses into the air like; Carbon dioxide, methane,Nitrous oxide and flourinated gasses. These gasses traps heat from the sun at earths atmosphere leading to a high temperature. This creates a cycle where air pollution contributes to climate change and climate change makes high temperature. The other cause is from burning fossil fuels in factories, driving cars, coal burning fireplace which make gases that are toxic and are not good for the Earth's atmosphere.
Air pollution not only will it be bad for our health, it is also bad for our home, Earth. It can cause global warming that leads to high temperature and climate change.

What will you do to help stop air pollution?
What ways can we stop global warming.

I think by doing what we can like walking, biking to places and not use the car. We can also try to recycle and reduce waste.

Thank you for reading my blog.

Thank you.

Super powers (SLJ)

Hola everyone

If you could have any super power what would it be? My power would be the power of teleportation or going back in time.

I would want the power of teleportation because when it comes to walking and running I am lazy But if I had the power of teleportation I would not need to walk or run . For example I could teleport to school and teleport to my home and teleport lots of places not needing to walk or run.

I would also want the power to go back in time so if I make mistakes I could go back in time so I could fix it.

Did you like the 2 powers I chose?

Thank you for reading my blog post please write a comment for feedback goodbye I hope to see you on my next blog post.

Bird of the year (SLJ)

Good morning everyone

New Zealand is a home to many different kinds of native birds. About a third of our native bird species are at risk of disappearing forever and becoming extinct.

New Zealand holds a ‘Bird of the Year’ competition where people can vote for their favorite native bird. This year, the winner was the kererū.

I am Going to go on the Bird of the Year website, look through the native birds on the site, and choose one that interests you and be writing you a short description of the bird I picked.

The bird I picked is the Rowi.
It is a okarito brown kiwi and the rarest of NZ five species. It is found in Okarito on the west coast of the south Island. the Rowi eat earthworms, spiders, crickets, weta and freshwater crayfish. They also eat fallen fruit and seeds.
