NZ Department of Conservation (DOC) Ranger- (SLJ)

Hello Everyone.🙂

New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) have people working for them called Rangers, their job is to protect the wildlife (animals and plants) living on the Great Barrier Island and Little Barrier Island. These islands are ‘animal reserves meaning you are not allowed to go there or hunt any animals or you will face a big fine or even end up in jail.

Today we are going to list some pros (good things) and cons (bad things) about working as a DOC ranger.

DOC Ranger

Pros
  1. protecting lives, property and natural resources can be satisfying.
  2. fantastic and kind people to work with
  3. fun team environment flexible work place
  4. great work place culture and support
  5. lots of different types of work activities like habitat protection, public education programs, data collection and law enforcement
Cons
  1. physical demanding work , often outdoors, challenging.
  2. only seasonal
  3. slow employment growth
  4. paperwork and spreadsheets
  5. strict qualified and training requirements for law enforcement positions.
Would you like to be a DOC Ranger or not?

I think being a DOC Ranger is amazing but I already have my own dream of what I want to be when I grow up in the future.

Other than a DOC Ranger what do you want to be in the future?

    WOW, you have come up with a list of five pros and cons! All great points too! Did you use an online tool to help you with some ideas for the list? I am super impressed and I think your post deserves to be shared with all the other SLJ bloggers out there.

    I especially like how you have talked about the work environment and the different opportunities you could take on from the job. Having professional development sessions would help DOC rangers become more skilful.

    You have thought of some realistic challenges you could encounter at the work place. Having to be physically active all the time with documenting everything on the side would make you feel mentally and physically drained.

    What do you want to be when you grow up? What are your passion and aspirations in life? I would love to know! As you may have guessed already, I am preparing to be a teacher who can help students (or even adults) learn. I just finished my studies at the University of Auckland.
