Polluted Rivers (SLJ)

Hi Everyone,Sorry I did not not do this last week but today I will gladly do this blog post and get it finished.Do you like swimming in rivers? Some of these lovely rivers are polluted and that is not good.
Today I will name 2 rivers that are being polluted, where they are located and what if anything being done to help these polluted rivers.

                     1. One of the polluted river in New Zealand is the Manawatu River.
  • The Manawatu River is a major river of the lower North Island of New Zealand and has its headwaters to the northwest of Norsewood in the Ruahine Ranges of the Tararua District.
  • The Manawatu River is highly polluted because of the runoff from surrounding dairy farms, but towns on the river’s edge also contribute to this pollution with untreated sewage and industrial waste.
  • To help clean up the river, they have groups of people from the government and the community come up with ideas to help Clean Up the Manawatu River. like:

  • 1.Ensuring waste that has to go into water is properly treated to meet water quality standards
  • 2.Keeping an eye on water that is taken out of the river so there is enough for everyone, including the fish
  • 3.Helping to fence off rivers and streams so bad chemicals do not get into water and pollute it

      2. Another polluted river is called Mataura
  •  The Mataura River is located in the Southland Region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is 190 kilometres long.
  • The river is polluted because of the Toxic algae found in the lower Mataura river. To stop the toxic algae from spreading to other rivers they tell people who have been to the river to clean their gears properly.

  1. Talofa Talisa,

Great job on choosing Manawatu River and Mataura River to compare and contrast. I can see that you've given us facts about the rivers regarding their current condition. It is sad to hear that these rivers have been polluted from substances such as runoff from surrounding dairy farms and toxic algae.

I like how you have talked about the different action plans that are in place which will hopefully slow down pollution in these rivers. It is great that you mentioned the word 'community' because at the end of the day, we should all collaboratively work together to sustain river ecosystems.

If we depend on each other thinking that someone would do the job one day, it will never happen. Do you agree or disagree? I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions on this matter.

Keep it up and I'll blog ya later!

    Susie :)
