The amazing world of cactus (SLJ)

Hello Everyone! Have you ever thought about the wonderful amazing things around us? Take for example, the cactus; some cacti are able to survive as little as 3 millilitres(ml) of water a day. Amazing, don't you think... I don't think I can survive with only 3 ml of water a day, can you?🤔

Let’s imagine that you are given a cactus for your birthday. To keep it alive, you must give it 3 ml of water every day.Over one full year, how much water will you need to give your cactus plant? How would you work it out?

This is is how I work it out:

  • cacti needs 3 ml of water a day.
  • 365 days in a year.
You know how much water you need a day and how many days in a year. So to find the answer we times the amount of water needs a day with the amount of days in a year.
  • water need to give cactus plant = (millilitre cacti needs a day) x (days in a year).
= (3 ml a day) X (365 days in a year) =1095ml

You need 1095ml of water to give to your cactus for a year.

Do you have a cactus plant?
Do have another way of solving this?
I watch on youtube that in the desert you can cook a cacti to eat to survive.
Hope you enjoy my blog please leave a comment or like. See you on my next blog post.😊

  1. Kia ora Talisa,

How are you doing? It is great to make my way through your old blog posts to see what you've done over the past few weeks.

Ka pai for having a go at solving this maths problem. You have given us a clear explanation of the steps you've taken to get to the final answer. I think anyone who might have felt confused with this problem will be able to understand the procedure by looking at your blog post. Precisely done!

Always remember to write down everything (as you are) when you come across any maths question. It will help you go back to certain parts and find where you have made a mistake. Maths is all about making mistakes and learning from them as you go so keep up the good work!!

Your answer is correct for this activity :)

    All the best,
    Susie
