Great Barrier Reef (SLJ)

 Hello guys,

Happy New year!!!!!

Sorry for not doing this summer learning journey activity last week Friday, so I did it today.

Have you ever seen Finding Dory or Finding Nemo? Did you know their setting were both in the Great barrier Reef?
Image of great barrier reef
The great barrier reef is the worlds largest reef system it is bigger than New Zealand. It is so big you can see it from outer space. Over 2 million people come to visit the great barrier reef and a great place for family's and kids to see in the holidays.

Our beautiful Barrier Reef over the past 30 years, most of the bright and colourful corals has lost its colour and turned bleach. The Australian government are using 2 million dollars each year to protect the Great Barrier Reef. That is a lot of money isn't it.

Today I will list three different ideas or strategies of how to raise funds to help protect the Great Barrier Reef:

Firstly,I would ask a chocolate factory if they would help out with raising funds to help protect our coral reefs by providing chocolates with pictures of the coral reef saying save our coral reef. Then I would sell the chocolates or get my school to help sell them.

Secondly, by doing a school play about saving our coral reef and money for the tickets goes to the funds to help protect our coral reef.

Thirdly,I could ask a clothes factory if they could help out with providing the white t-shirts. I could also ask a company to provide colour dyes. Then my class will tie dye the t-shirts with a message to save our coral reef.

When everyone do their part in helping save the coral reef then we would be able to enjoy it in the future.

What ways would you fund-raise money to save our coral reef? What other ways would you do to help save it?

Thank you for reading my blog please post a comment happy new year.

Polluted Rivers (SLJ)

Hi Everyone,Sorry I did not not do this last week but today I will gladly do this blog post and get it finished.Do you like swimming in rivers? Some of these lovely rivers are polluted and that is not good.
Today I will name 2 rivers that are being polluted, where they are located and what if anything being done to help these polluted rivers.

                     1. One of the polluted river in New Zealand is the Manawatu River.
  • The Manawatu River is a major river of the lower North Island of New Zealand and has its headwaters to the northwest of Norsewood in the Ruahine Ranges of the Tararua District.
  • The Manawatu River is highly polluted because of the runoff from surrounding dairy farms, but towns on the river’s edge also contribute to this pollution with untreated sewage and industrial waste.
  • To help clean up the river, they have groups of people from the government and the community come up with ideas to help Clean Up the Manawatu River. like:

  • 1.Ensuring waste that has to go into water is properly treated to meet water quality standards
  • 2.Keeping an eye on water that is taken out of the river so there is enough for everyone, including the fish
  • 3.Helping to fence off rivers and streams so bad chemicals do not get into water and pollute it

      2. Another polluted river is called Mataura
  •  The Mataura River is located in the Southland Region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is 190 kilometres long.
  • The river is polluted because of the Toxic algae found in the lower Mataura river. To stop the toxic algae from spreading to other rivers they tell people who have been to the river to clean their gears properly.

Here is a picture of the Mataura river

Fishing in NZ(SLJ)

Hi Everyone,

Sorry that I was not able to do this last week on Friday but I am able to will post it today so...

Who likes fishing? I haven't gone out fishing but I did saw some people fishing at the wharf in Timaru and at the pier in New Brighton.

I believe most New Zealanders enjoys fishing. Sadly they end up fishing on the same region that it ends up not having enough fish in the region anymore. When this happens, they called the area 'overfished' and then no one is allowed to fish in that region, to help get more fish in that region. The  New Zealand Government made a law to stop people going and fish there. If you are caught fishing at an overfished region, you will need to pay a fined.  The maximum fine for fishing in a restricted area is $100 000. This is a lot of money.

What are your thoughts about this rule? Do you think it's fair for people to pay up to $100,000 for overfishing?

I think it is fair and good because If we overfished we would be hurting the environment by hurting the ocean and that is bad. Also if we overfished we would not have enough fish in the region which would be bad to.But I also think that is a lot of money to pay so I think it is good and bad.

If you are given a photo of a selfie would you guess where they were and what they were doing?

Today I will show you a photo and tell you where I think they are and where they are and what they are doing.

In the picture I think they look like a group of teenagers who are great friends and been through a lot.  They also look like they are taking a group selfie after a good time at an exiting game and celebrating. They look happy and great to be together. They also look like they are in the Philippines.

What do you think is happening in the photo?

The eighth wonder of the world (SLJ)

😀Hi guys, 😁

Today my blog post is about Milford Sound.  Milford sound is a well known as the Eighth Wonder.  It is called that because it is one of the most beautiful places on earth.  It was created by large ice particles melting. Then around the river (melted ice particles) there are mountains that form the eye catching view.

If you could go to Milford sound What would you do or use as transportation a helicopter a hike or a boat? I would use a boat because If I take a hike I would have to walk but I am to lazy. If I take a helicopter I would be able to see it but not up closely and it would move faster so you need to spot things fast but when you are on the boat you get to take your time. Also on the boat I could catch fish and feel the nice breeze. So I know that I want to go on a boat if I could go to Milford sound.

Did you like my reasons?

Have you ever went to Milford sound?

Stranger than Fiction (SLJ)

Merry Christmas to all,

I'm sorry for posting this activity late..

Today we are looking at strangest plants species on Earth.Did you know that there are more than 298 000 different kinds (species) of plants. Some of these plants live on land and some live in the water. I get to learn about the ten strangest plants species in the world. From this list I get to choose two plants and list three similarities and three differences between the plants.

The plants I have chosen are:

1. Rafflesia Anodii and 2.corpse flower
Image result for corpse flower facts
     Image result for rafflesia arnoldii

Rafflesia Anodii is like the corpse flower
They are both flowers
They both have a really bad smell
They are both really big
They are located in the same place

Raffelesia Anodii also have some things they don't have in common
1. The corpse flower is bigger then the Raffelesia Anodii.
2.They both look different
3. They both are different colors

Do you know anything about the corpse flower?

Do you know any other similarities or differences between the two flower plants I picked?

Mighty Mangroves (SLJ)

Hey readers,

Sorry for not posting these SLJ activities earlier. But I am sure that everyone was spending Christmas with their family and opening presents.

What do you know about mangroves? I learn that they can live in difficult conditions, and help to protect land too.
I was told that in the islands they use mangroves to help stop the sea eating away land.  They are tough and strong plant.

Can you think of someone who is tough and strong? They can be someone you know or a character from a movie or a book you read.

Mine is Nephi  if you are wondering who that is, he is a person from a book called The Book Of Mormon. He is the third son of Lehi and Sariah who used to live Jerusalem but had to leave the city. I believe that he is strong, because he was on a dangerous mission to get the brass plates and he kept going in choosing the right and never stopped because he believed and had faith. I know that making right choices is hard. That is why I believe he is tough for listening to what his father commands and strong for doing what his father commands even when it's hard.

Do you think Nephi is strong too?

Do you know anyone who is tough and strong?

Thank you for reading my blog post please write a comment and I hope I can see you on my next blog post.

Weaving a Tall Tale…(SLJ)

Hello everyone,
Christmas day has gone by and now new year is approaching.

I was suppose to do this activity on Christmas day but I forgot about it. I was so busy with opening my presents and enjoying family time that I didn't have time to do it.
So here I am with the activities for Week 2 day 2 on weaving.

I got to watch a little video

Raranga Ika - How to make a simple fish out of flax

Weaving looks interesting but I am not interested in it. I find it boring and complicated. Also I have to go get flax leaves to weave with and I don't know how to cut the leave from plant and not destroy plant.

My mum told me that she use do weaving with different leaves instead of flax. She also told me that she learned it when she was young and in primary school. They used coconut leaves and pandanus leaves. weaving can be used for many things.

Do you know how to do flax weaving?

If so, what was the first thing you learnt to weave?

Thank you for reading my blog post please give me feedback I hope you had a good Christmas goodbye.

My long sleep (SLJ)

Hey Everyone,
Did you all have a good Christmas?

Are you a night owl or a early riser? I am an night owl because I really don't like going to sleep so I watch movies really late and end up falling asleep then in the morning I don't want to get up or get ready for something and I get annoyed easily.

My mum is a bit of both, who wakes up early in the morning to wake me up and help me get ready for school or do what she has to do as a mum, she sometimes stays up at night to do house chores or laundry when everyone is asleep or she might be watching movies. That's why I think my mum is a neither a night owl or early riser.

My dad is also  a night owl and early riser. I think he is a early riser because he always wakes up early to go to work. He is also a night owl because he likes to stay up late at night to read his scriptures or watch movies.

My oldest brother is a night owl because he likes staying up at night playing fortnite or watch movies but hate waking up early morning to do his chores.

My second eldest brother is a early riser because he always go to bed early and wakes up early to do his chores then play games.

y up late and don't go to sleep. Sometimes he wakes everyone one up early with his crying. She likes me giving him cuddles or play with him during his tummy time.

All my family are different, unique and great , which makes my family special. I love my family even though we are different.

How about your family. Are you night owls or early risers?

Thank you for reading my blog post I hope I can see you on my next blog post.

My supporter group (SLJ)

Hey Everyone!

If you were in the cycling race around Lake Taupo  and you got to have a support group who would you choose if you were to have a supporting group and why?🤔

Well if I had a support group, the people
I would choose would be ...

First my brother Christian because he would keep my energy up and make me smile when I am slowing down and that is why I would take him in my support group.

Second I would also choose my mum because she would organised everything, so we know what we need; and if everything is safe and sound and ready to go  so that is why my mum would be chosen.

Third I would choose my dad, because he is good at reading maps so we don't get lost in the race and he know most of the south island and he would protect me from harm and he's funny too, so we don't get bored during the race and that is another person who would be in my support group.

With my support group, I know I could do the Lake Taupo Challenge safely and enjoy doing it.

Who would you choose for your support group?

Did you like who I chose in my support group?

Hoped you loved my blog post, Merry Christmas! Hope to see you on my next blog post, please leave a comment or like.

This summer I have got to do lots of fun things. One of my favourite  things to do in the summer is playing on the trampoline.

Have you ever played on the trampoline?

Do you know any  tricks to do on the trampoline?

Letter about Tundra- (SLJ)

Hornby Primary School,
Christchurch
New Zealand.

21st December 2018.

Dear Vaimoe,

How are you today? Are you getting anything for Christmas? Only four more days to go. Yay!!!

I have visited Tundra. It is near the North Pole. Do you think Santa Clause lives in the North Pole? Tundra is area of land(biome) that is cold, dry and does not have any trees.  The average temperature is negative twenty eight degrees Celsius (-28*C). It was very cold and I enjoy drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows .

They have lots of lovely animals such as lemmings, arctic hares, arctic foxes and caribou that looks like reindeer. Do you think some of the remainders belong to Santa Clause? Here are some of the photos of the Tundra animals.

  1. Lemmings                                                          2. Arctic Hares

    3. Artic Foxes                             4. Caribou

They do things differently in Tundra from New Zealand. But they have nice things you can do like:
  • Hiking
  • Skiing
  • Guided sight seeing and
  • see the Northern Lights.
I had lots of fun. Hope you get a chance to visit Tundra. So you can tell me all about it.

Sincerely,
Talisa.
