Skittle Colours

Aim:

I want to find out what happens when you put skittles in water.

Method:

Equipment

• 8x Skittles
• Warm water
• Petri Dish
• Beaker
• Paper towel

Instructions

1. Get your equipment
2. Put the skittles into the petri dish
3. Spread the skittles out around the sides of the petri dish
4. Don't need to but (Do not put the same coloured skittle next to each other (?)
5. Clean the beaker with the paper towel 
6. Place the used paper towel on the table
7. Carefully place the petri dish on top of the paper towel.
8. GENTLY pour the water in the middle of the petri dish until it is half full
9. Observe what happens

Describe what happened

The colour on the skittles in the petri dish slowly dissolved heading towards the middle colouring the water. The colours were separated which made it look like a pattern.

Why did the colour move the way it did?

Because of the shape of the skittle.When sugar is moved into water it heads towards the middle. The colour comes out of the skittle and slowly spread out.

Fish in a Tree

 Hola Everyone,

In hurumanu one (With AL Miss Allen's Class) we have been doing some reading activities. We got split into groups with AL and were given separate work for each group. My group is the book study. We read a book and then answer some questions and do some activities. The book I am currently reading is called "Fish in a Tree". Have you heard of it? It's a really nice book and I love reading it. I'm only up to chapter 16 but its so exciting.

Reading Comprehension

1) The card Ally gave to her teacher was a sympathy card. A sympathy card is something
you give to loved ones you lost. Ally’s message was misunderstood and people thought that
Ally gave Mrs hall that card to tell her you’re sorry she needs to leave us to go have some
dumb baby.

2) Ally tries to apologise to Mrs Hall but misses the chance to because her mind goes blank
from guilt. She might have also ran because she realised she had missed her bus. ?

3) Ally can’t read it herself so it makes her feel like its a gift in a glass box like it’s
always on display

4) I find writing difficult because I am not able to put my understanding and feelings into a piece
of writing. I find it easy to do maths and reading though.

5) Ally's mum misunderstood her daughter, thinking that she was just trying to be the
class clown; because Ally is always sent to the principal’s office, without knowing her daughter’s
difficulties with reading and writing.

Silver dollar day

A silver dollar day for me would probably be my birthday. We had a lot of food and could eat as much

as we wanted. Every birthday I would always ask my parents to take me to eat. I love eating.

Global Warming

 If for how long mankind has been on earth is put into one day. How long would that be?

3 Seconds

Mankind has been on earth for only a mere 3 seconds and look what we have done. Global warming, Deforestation, Pollution. We have wrecked the homes of creatures who have been here way before we have been here and caused many to go extinct and endangered. 

It is estimated that in 2050 humanity may overpopulate this country and cause every animal to lose it's home and natural habitat.

That's why for one day each year we have a day called Earth day. In wananga class we got to learn more about what humanity has done to earth and how we can solve our problems. We read a piece of writing and some activities of how we can restore our earth.

Edible Slime

 Aim:

I want to find out how to make edible slime.

Research:

Method:

Equipment

• Bag of any sized marshmallows ( using 5 jumbo marshmallows)
• Cornflower or cornstarch
• Oil (Can use any oil even coconut oil)
• Heatproof bowl (I am using a paper cup)
• Spoon or any Mixing object
• Microwave
• Board (I am using a piece of paper)

Instructions ( From the Video)

1. Get your equipment
2. Take two handfuls of marshmallows or any amount your comfortable with and put them in the heatproof bowl(paper cup) 
3. Put the bowl/ plastic cup in the microwave for 30 seconds (Quite hot be careful)
4. Mix the marshmallows with the spoon or other mixing object
5. Check that they are nice and hot and squishy
6. Give a good stir round with the spoon/mixing object
7. Add a little spoonful of oil
8. Stir that nice oil in properly with the spoon/mixing object
9. Add about half a cup of cornflower or cornstarch (Not all in one go)
10. Stir and mix in as much flour as you can with the marshmallows
11. (If you want) Add some food colouring into the mixture
12. Wait a little for your mix to cool down
13. Make sure your hands are clean
14. Start kneading the mix with your hands like you would with normal slime 
15. Sprinkle a little bit of cornflour or corn starch onto the board
16. Take some of the mixture with your hands and place it on the board or paper
17. Knead the mix on the board with your hands like you would with normal slime
18. Keep kneading and putting in a bit of cornflour or corn starch each time
19. Make sure there is enough flour in slime
20. (If you want to) Add some sprinkles or decorations
21. Enjoy playing with or eating your edible slime

Art Class

 Talofa Readers,

What is art to you? To me art is all about the feels and looks. My younger self honestly would just mash bits and scrunches of paper and call that art. But now I know that art is beautiful and delicate and should be treated properly.

The first thing we did in art class was make a flip book. The first time was a fail since the paper couldn't flip properly. But luckily our teacher handed out some sticky notes to use. In my flip book I was trying to show a eye up close and then go out to make it cool. Here it is(Sorry you can't see much) Hope you like it

The second thing we did was need to choose a scenario to make a video with a group. In my group there is me(obviously), Riley and Delilah. We chose the third scenario. Which was about the  

                                         This is the Scenario we chose and currently I am making the story.

In the scenario there are two main characters. The protagonist Miss daisy the superhero and the antagonist Mr Patriarchy. There are are other side characters but these two are the main. 

                                                          Mr Patriarchy

This is Mr Patriarchy the character I am working on. He is basically my favourite character even thou he is the villain. He has a wife called Paris and daughter called Alice who are side characters I added in.

Miss Daisy 

Miss daisy is the other character(Which you know). 

She is the super girl who can't tie her shoelaces. She is just a teenager but she believes she needs to fix that as part of her responsibility.

These are the backgrounds and colours that we are going to use for the video's and characters. Riley a girl in my group basically got the backgrounds and colours I asked for. So I am very grateful for that.

  

We also learned about pinching out with clay. Like when you have a ball of clay and you pinch out or like kind of squash out bits and pieces. Some people separate the species and put them on top of each other which makes it fall apart easily. That's why Miss/our teacher tried to teach and tell us about this skill.

Resilience Board

Bonjour Everyone,

How was your weekend?

For the last few weeks in Wananga we have been doing a resilience board. The resilience board is a board of activities that involve resilience. The activity I chose was to make a gratitude journal. A gratitude journal is where for five days I write one thing each day that I am grateful for and why. Another thing I am grateful for is the beautiful winter season. Because I love winter.

Gummy Bear Osmosis

 Aim:

I want to find out what happens when gummy bears are put in liquids.

Method:

Equipment

• Salt Water/Sodium Chloride
• Normal Water
• Sugar Water/Sucrose
• Gummy Bears
• 2x Petri dishes
• Marker
• Electronic Scales 
• Safety Glasses

Instructions

1. Get your Equipment
2. Wear your safety glasses (IT IS A PRINCIPAL in the science lab).
3. With the marker, write your name and the conditions (dry, water, saltwater, sugar water) and the weight of gummy bears on the bottom of Petri dishes
4. Do the experiment.

Results:

The water gummy weighs the most weight.

Why? The reason why is because gummy bears have small holes inside them. In water there are small molecules and Sugar/salt water have big molecules. Since gummy bears have quite small holes more little water molecules can come in and can expand. Sugar and salt water aren't able to do that because of their big molecules only a few could make it inside but they get clogged.

If not because the gummy bear absorbs the water.

Samoan Language Week

Happy Samoan language week!

Are you Samoan?

In my wananga class we have been doing some activities to help us learn some Samoan words too. For example we have been doing word searches, crosswords, learning numbers and drawing pictures before labelling them. My favourite was the word searches. Too bad we had to do them online because it would be easier on paper and I prefer that.
